Root ANY HTC One X! [Windows/Mac/Linux][ATT/International][One-Click Method]

For those of you who want to root your HTC One X or HTC One XL (AT&T), here’s a simple, universal One-Click method that works on ANY HTC One X or XL, and also works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

This is probably the best universal method to “safely” give you root.  In fact, it’s so safe, you can even try it on ANY Android device with ICS.  At the best, it will give you root and at the worst, it won’t.  (This is actually the same root method used on Transformer Prime Android tablet.)

Also, this method does NOT erase any data, just gives you root.  So if you have the international HTC One X, you can use this method to get root, backup your apps using Titanium Backup app, then do the bootloader unlocking root method after.

UPDATE: It seems that for International One X, this root method works for some and not others.  If it doesn’t, that probably means you have a software version with this root exploited patched by HTC.  No worries, just use the other root method.

So, let’s do this!

Video tutorial for all Windows, Mac, and Linux:

For Windows root method see 00:00 to 8:09, then 14:22 to end.
For Linux root method see 00:00 to 1:18, then 8:09 to 11:43, then 14:22 to end.
For Mac root method see 00:00 to 1:18, then 11:43 to end.

Step 1. Make sure USB debugging is checked ON under Settings->Developer options.

Step 2. Then connect your HTC One X to your computer via micro-USB cable and make sure it’s set to “Charge only”.

Step 3. Download OneXRootOneClick.zip and unzip, it should most likely give you a folder called OneXRootOneClick under your Downloads folder.

Linux users can skip to Step 7.

Mac users can skip to Step 9.

How to Root HTC One X on Windows!

Step 5. For Windows, you will need HTC drivers installed.  Check that you have “My HTC” or “Android ADB” in Device Manager.

If you don’t, download appropriate drivers for your Windows, unzip.  Then manually update your drivers.  If you don’t know how, watch the tutorial video at the top.

Step 6. Simply double-click on runme.bat inside the HTCOneXOneClick folder.  Your One X should reboot 3 times and you should be rooted, as simple as that.  Skip to Step 11.

Step 7. Open a terminal and type:

cd Downloads

cd OneXRootOneClick

chmod 755 *

sudo ./adb-linux devices

If you don’t get “device” and get “no permissions” type:

sudo ./adb-linux kill-server

sudo ./adb-linux devices

Then type:

sh runmelinux.sh

Step 8. Your phone should be rooted after 3 reboots.  Skip to Step 11.

How to Root HTC One X on Mac OSX!

Step 9. Open a terminal and type:

cd Downloads

cd OneXRootOneClick

chmod 755 *

./adb-mac devices

sh runmemac.sh

Step 10. Your One X should be rooted after 3 reboots.

Step 11. Once your phone has been rooted, you can find SuperSU app in your app drawer.

Congratulations!  You’ve now learned how to root your HTC One X!

For international HTC One X, this rooted method gives you root but if you want to install custom ROMs, you will still have to unlock your bootloader and re-root your phone.  This just gives you root so you can run rooted apps or use Titanium Backup app to backup your apps before unlocking your bootloader.

For AT&T HTC One XL and alike, if you want to install custom ROMs, you don’t have to unlock your bootloader but simply flash custom recovery in fastboot.

    Hi !,

I ve done many times to see if something changes .. but still I have no super user. The phone reboots 3 times as u said and i have drivers and all the files. Help me please (im doing it on windows )

    thanks !!!

    Mauro

    • Lee says:

I had the same problem, Super User doesnt show in apps list

    • eder says:

I did everything you said on the video. Installed the driver and it does say My HTC. But when it’s done doing the rooting – it does reboots my phone as many times as the one on the video- nothing happens
it doesn’t install anything. I tried to install super user my self, but when I open it, it says not su binaries installed, and it closes it self.
When is doing the rooting I get to many fails. Showing that doesn’t have access to the files in the folder “OneXRootOneClick.zip” So I don’t know if is it something wrong with this folder.
      Help Please.!

    • jeff says:

If your not seeing SU or your getting the no binary error. Your probably on firmware 2.20 which can not be rooted. Check your android version. There is no way at all to root 2.20

  2. daelsta says:

hey, tried it on linux, but after finishing i don’t have root access.

  3. JohannOstertag says:

    hi guys,
Can I install with this method cwm and than install custom roms?
Sry Im new to the htc world… :-)

    • DxRulz says:

Johan, i dont think u can install custom roms because in order to install custom roms u need to unlock bootloader..u can unlock bootloader on HTC ONE X tergra version..but not sure abt AT&T version….

      • DxRulz says:

Sorry for wrong info Johann..i dunno much abt AT&T version..as above mentioned it is possible to flash customs roms..u have to flash custom reovery in flashboot..

  4. tony says:

lol think my phones broken just keeps on rebooting after this

  5. tony says:

please help what can i do

  6. tony says:

lol did factory reset and ran one click again all processes worked but no super user and you get a red tampered flag in reboot mode

    • admin says:

Do you have AT&T version? Did you flash another recovery? I don’t think that’s root related.

If you did flash recovery, just go find AT&T stock recovery and reflash in fastboot.

  7. tony says:

no i have international version and i have not flashed any roms

    • admin says:

Hmmm, I think you probably followed another site’s directions? You can’t get tampered warning with this method. The only way you can get that is if you installed a recovery which this root method doesn’t. So, you will have to tell me exactly what you did otherwise I can’t help you.

ok, after looking around on the internet…this method doesn’t work for the international version!!! please change your article…

  9. tony says:

This dose not work for international version is there a method i can root but dont have to unlock bootloader ?

  10. hei says:

where do I find the OneXRootOneClick.zip

  11. Mauro says:

    hi again !,

I think u should change the title of the article ,you have teh feedback from us , so u know now with the phone and versions that it could work .
And the most important , u will have less people asking for “help , help it doesnt work ” (u save time ) and peole wont lose time doing it again and again + u wont lose credibility.
Thats my humble adivice or opinion.

    Cheers ! :)

    • admin says:

Well, I think it’s still helpful for people who want to backup their apps before using the other method. It’s an option and it does not take long to run the one-click program. At the worst, you can try the other method. At best, you can make backups before unlocking bootloader.

    • icedwater says:

I believe it would be more helpful to add a bit more detail to ‘it doesn’t work’. What stage of booting is the phone stuck at, what error messages do you see, etc. That way it would be useful if the script should be amended.

      Cheers!

    • admin says:

what is not running? your phone? hold down power button to boot after!

    • Shaun says:

Mine said the same, and it works. I have the ATT version.

      • P4ulm4c says:

Mine said all that and nothing y is this

        • Huub says:

Mine says the same. The phone boots up nicely, everything seems to be working just fine. But SuperSU is not installed. Does it have anything to do with this message: “rm failed for /system/xbin/su, No such file or directory” maybe?
To be sure, I followed the instructions on your site and your site only. My phone is an European HTC One X.

          • Max says:

You have a newer software version it seems, you need to follow this other root method here:
            http://onexroot.com/one-x-root/how-to-root-one-x/

            • Bunzaak says:

I probably have the newer software version as well, but have an unblocked Rogers (Canadian service provider) One X which is dual core like the AT&T version. Should I still try this other method even though it clearly states that it is meant for the quad core version?

              • Mark Delorme says:

I also have a Rogers Wireless “HTC One X”, just ordered it this week.. were you able to manage the rooting process of your phone? Mine runs Android 4.0.3

if so, which tutorial did you resort to in successfully rooting your phone?

  13. tony says:

lol this dose not work on the international version with the latest update 1.29.401.11

  14. Kyle Prince says:

Again I concur it doesn’t work with HTC’s most recent version 1.29.401.11, probably fixed the hole that this method used. However if this root method could be changed so that it can be rooted then hats off to you :-)

  15. Honza says:

Root works, but it is still in S-ON mode. :(

    Know how get s-off?

    • admin says:

Not yet for One X but you don’t need S-OFF to install new ROMs, it’s just that you have to do fastboot command to boot into recovery.

      • Usman says:

I have an HTC one x which is on software version 1.26.401.2 and it wont update! i asked the HTC guys and they said that its a T mobile UK variant… then i asked the t mobile people and they said that they cant help! and plus the phone is S-ON!! can you please tell me how to solve this problem? would rooting the phone and getting a different ROM help? and if yes then please guide me step by step how to root a S-on HTC ONE X, coz im a NOOB!

        THank you :)

        • Max says:

          Not rooted?

        • Pollob says:

Mine also same problem…..my software version is also 1.26.401.2, android version 4.0.3 and sense 4.0. no OTA update received. i thik my phone used by custom ROM. I purchased second hand UK Vodafone from a local shop from Bangladesh. plz help me. what should i do?

  16. Emil says:

Hi.. Have the same problem here! Have 1.29.401.11 version and dont get supersu.
i have the international version, quad core tegra 3 version.

I hope not my phone lost their warranty, and became brickad becouse of this method !
Its still works fine after trying this, but not rooted i think ?

    • Markyboy says:

Same here too. It does the process fine but in the software ID writes the kernel version 2.6.39.4 -gc9932b1 root@abm053 #1.
I guess we just have to wait!

  17. Xmoo says:

This will only work on S4 chipset. This is the Tacoroot method.
    Won’t work on Tegra.

  18. farnsbarns says:

This will not work on any Tegra based device on any software version, full stop. Anyone who says it does, it has it could work is lying or is seriously misguided.

  19. Tank says:

mine is 1.28.707.10 Asian Malaysia Version HOX
I dont get SU too. T.T

  20. doublefrag says:

    HI
    Same here too, 1.28.163.9 and 2.6.39.4-g86aa44d root@ABM013 # 1
    no superuser at all

  21. Agan says:

Can you make a tutorial on how to dual-boot ROM on HTC One X?

  22. lovemyhtc says:

Hey I’m pretty new to android but I can handle myself with electronics, I’m getting the same problem as a few others with no root or super su and when insalling it from market place it gave me the same message. I’d really like to get it rooted as I’m in china alot of apps are blocked and I travel alot and the battery isnt so user friendly so I’d really like to try some rom’s. Thanks, your site is really exact. oh btw I have the latest update 1.29.709.12

    • farnsbarns says:

This root method is not for tegra devices, furthermore, you’ll have to unlock the bootloader to use custom roms anyway.

      • admin says:

The processor has nothing to do with the root method its a software hack.

        • Farnsbarns says:

Tegra is not just a processor, it’s an SoC (System on a Chip) it controls memory protection, I/O and a lot more. It is entirely to do with the chipset. THIS DOES NOT WORK! ACCEPT IT!

  23. dre N says:

i live in england and i have the HTC one x i tried to install using this method but it doesnt work.

    :)

  24. Someone says:

    remound succeeded
    1437 KB/s
rm failed for /system/xbin/su, No such file or directory
    etc etc,
    then it says:
ALl Done rooting HTC One X, Check out etc. etc.

But when I turn on my phone and go to the SuperSU app then it says “The Su binary is not installed and SuperSu cannot install it, that is a problem” .

So the phone is not rooted after all. Why is this happening? Do I need to go to HTCDev.com and unlock the bootloader or is it something that I have to do in the -Volume+Power button? I chose fastboot from that menu and then ran the script. Any help very appreciated.

    • Farnsbarns says:

This doesn’t work for tegra based international OneX’s. The Author insists it does for some but from what I can see that’s impossible. This is the TacoRoot exploit and wont work on Tegra devices. Despite a slew of comments saying it doesn’t work and the Author accepting it doesn’t work for everyone he refuses to change the misleading article title.

He has claimed it works on some software versions but people on 1.28 and both 1.29 versions have said it doesn’t work. Logic dictates that it CANNOT work.

      • admin says:

It does work I did it on my tegra like 10 times but you can just use the other method if it doesn’t work for u simple as that.

        • Farnsbarns says:

You are the only person who claims this has worked. Logic dictates that that is impossible. Every comment says it doesn;t work on tegra devices, you keep saying it doesn’t work for everyone. Despite this, and the fact that you have been asked twice you still haven’t changed the topic title.

Why don’t you make a video of it working on a tegra device?

    • admin says:

Just use the other method yes.

  25. steinom says:

This script only works for ATT models, dos not work for Europe modes far as I know.

Solved this problem, only to run into the same one as everyone else. Run runme.bat as “runme.bat shell” from the command line. You’ll have to cd to the directory that runme.bat is in first.

hey you all i just rooted my phone so if u need help hmu. i went to xda. and they have a link its still works on the one x 1.85 make sure u turn ur wifi on ur phone as well as laptop or whatever ur using and that ur phone has at least 50 percent charge then head in your phone to settings and software update then run the root.bat wait for instructions and its all good phone will reboot twice and root is all good!

  63. rikkyrod says:

here is link its not really full of instructions so if u need help hmu people

max i signed ur petition hope we can get u back on bud. anyways thanks and hey ive tried to post the easy way to root on here it wont post it. heres link

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424

its not very user friendly or for noobs as it doesnt have instructions but it was fairly simple after i figured out …
we must first make sure phone has more than 50 percent battery then plug in connect charge only turn on wifi then head down to check for software update but dont hit anything yet. open up the file for download unzip , run root.bat wait for the instructions in black box. after a cup of seconds it will say to hit the check software button after doing so it will reboot 2 or 3 times then its done

  65. Jamie says:

thanks for the post. worked for me on international hct one x. I’m using a mac. I followed instructions. SuperSU didin’t work when you download it from app store. Download SuperUser instead.

  66. Dan says:

Hey thanks for the detailed instructions. Worked on my Rogers HTC one X LTE.

  67. Zenettii says:

For those of you that keep saying it doesn’t work on their international HOX, try doing a HTCDEV unlock on your bootloader first.
This does wipe your data, so back up first.

I found the above guide didn’t work, so I unlocked my bootloader to install a custom ROM, but before installing the ROM I tried the guide again, and it worked a treat.

When doing this on Linux, be sure to use root/sudo.

  68. Matt says:

I couldn’t get this to work on Windows (only rebooted once) so I switched to my netbook (Ubuntu), it claimed to have worked and rebooted 3 times etc but no changes occurred :(

i tried this and it worked! i have the super SU thing… but when i try the the HTC dev method to unlock bootloader, i get the token, but then when i punch in the flash command the disclaimer doenst show up on my phone even though it shows something was succesful on the CMD… the problem with my ONE X! it wont UPDATE from 1.26!! i asked the HTC guys and they said its a T-MOBILE UK variant..its upto them.. but ive heard people getting updates on t mobile… what should be done? any ideas?

    • Max says:

I don’t know on this, gotta go ask Tmobile UK then.

      • Usman says:

        ey Max,

I’m getting stuck at step 38 of your other how to root your one x tutorial, where you type: flashboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
        I receive:
        C:\Users\Manuel\Downloads\OneXRoot>fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
        sending ‘unlocktoken’ (0 KB)…
        OKAY [ 0.010s]
        writing ‘unlocktoken’…
        unlock token check successfully
        OKAY [0.251s]
        finished. total time: 0.225s

after all this nothing comes up on my phone! NO DISCLAIMER!! what should i do?

        • Max says:

Make sure you COPIED the Unlock_code.bin to the folder FIRST! You might be using the one I included in the folder, do not use that.

          • Usman says:

there is no Unlock.bin file in your folder mate… there is runme, fastboot and everything else, i get the unlock file from htcdev, then put it in the folder and then run the command.. the only thing i dont get is if i am able to obtain the token via this method, why doesnt the flashing part work? ok how do you know if your bootloader is already unlocked? and about the OTA updates for t mobile variant i asked tmobile people,,, they say that ill have to pay them to get a code to unlock the phone., but its already says unlocked on the boot screen and works with every other sim…

thanks a heap mate.. sorry for irritating you.. im a NOOB.. :)

I have Android version 4.0.4 and Software version 2.20.502.7 710RD.
I tried to unlock the bootloader by using the tutorial for using HTCdev.com, but when I run the .bat (or exe file, I forget) it just says it’s waiting for device, even though my phone is in the fastboot USB menu.

Am I just SOL for the time being? Thanks in advance, man.

Would like to know if the root will work if i perform a system software update.

If the root method will work, how do I go about performing the update? Do I need to unroot, install the new update and re-root again?

    I hope you could clarify

    • Jayden says:

did that to me too mate :(, doesnt work for some of the phones with the latest update, you will have to try the other root method. its longer but it works :)

after you do that i highly recommend you get the viperx 2.1.0 rom :)

      • karim says:

Jayden , i want to root my phone just to backup data with apps and to change game settings , i dont want to change the rom . Is the other methode safe for my phone? And i will still get htc updates ?
        Thnx for help !:)

        • jayden says:

Ahhh, hmm. I am new to this also sorry! I used the other method and followed the steps correctly BUT if you stuff up or miss a step you could be in trouble. But I’m sure if you follow them closely you’ll be fine, I just used the other method here: http://onexroot.com/one-x-root/how-to-root-one-x/
Uhrm I am not sure about the otas but I have seen a guide on this site of how to do them while rooted on stock Rom. I’m sure if you follow that you’ll have no worries.

If you want to back stuff up definitely use titanium backup after you root its great :)
I have the pro version which makes batch backups and installs really easy :

Goodluck! If you use that method I linked you to FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY :)

Ps the viperx Rom is just the HTC stock Rom on super steroids haha much
faster and the HTC sense is great! And you can download their updates ota
I got 2 yesterday and they updated no worries :)
Im on 4.0.4 even though my region doesn’t have it. Do consider it. I highly recommend it, if you have basic computer skills :)

  83. Jayden says:

hi there i attempted this method and it didnt work because i had the latest ota update from htc, but it did change my kernal number/name to some gibberish that i dont get :p

is there anyway to fix this and change the name back :)

or would i have to edit the kernal name in the kernel source and reattempt it? aha if that is at all possible?

sorry fairly new to rooting and flashing

i run viperx 2.1.0, and i dont think installing that changed the kernel name from what my failed root attempt changed it to?

much thanks if anyone is able to advise me on this :)

Hi i have the rogers htc one x with android ics 4.0.3 and sense 4.0 and software number 1.94.631.3… i want to know if this rooting with this specs will work? I am scared of bricking my phone or causing it to reboot nonstop like some users experienced.

Root “ANY” HTC ONE X is not accurate. You need to be on version 1.85 or OLDER for this to work. NO solution is available for those of us on the newest version of 2.20. Feel Free to correct me if I am wrong, but I can’t find a way to root my 2.20 device :-(

I kinda get the same problem… Even if it says its rooted, it doesn’t have SuperSU. When i installed SuperSU from the Play Store, and tried running it. It says “There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!”. So i guess this method can’t root the international version at all :/ and another method is just too long.. :/ Isn’t there a new version to one-click-root international versions?

  100. Sam says:

I get exactly the same error as Ben, using HTC Onex International. have tried the Windows64bit and Linux32Bit Process which leads me to think /data/local/tmp needs to be created on the device. Any ideas of the exactly location for this?

I have since mounted the phone as a disk drive and looked in there, there is a .data directory in the root of the device, or at least the root of the drive that gets mounted. I have also created a directory called data, next to .data, and done a chmod 777 on it. Then unmounted drive and set phone to charge only and tried again…still no luck (exactly the same error).

My only current idea is to manually create the /data/local/tmp and make sure everyone has full control over this.
Max are you able to confirm exactly where should be created? Or if you have any other suggestions they would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for any help
    Sam

I see many has a problem to root it.

I rooted my galaxy nexus and there was no problem. But i think its harder to root and unlock bootloader on htc.

Im sittning on stock today and want to try the CM10 rom and skip the sense joke.

  103. bryan says:

i rooted my htc one x on at&t and but didnt have supersu so i downloaded it from the play store and it said “supersu does not have bianary and cannot find one this is a problem!”

    Hey MAX!

HUGE FAN!!! I have a question about the HTC One X, AT&T version, software version 4.04. I am trying to root my phone. I have tried both methods of rooting and unlocking the bootlogger. Which one should I do first? So far nothing I have done has worked. I did everything in both of your videos step by step and nothing seems to work. Thank you for your help.

How do I root for the HTC AT & T One X with Android 4.0.4, updated in August 2012?

  107. chris says:

so i got to step 43 of the other htc one x root walk through and ran into a problem so then i started reading over the page and realized i had the htc one x dual core, so i tried the the one click method and gives a bunch of errors but then it says rooted but i had to download super su and super su is saying that there are no su binary installed.

do i have to undo what i did in the first walkthrough before the one click will work properly ?

  108. MReza says:

    hi
I try this method on windows and my one x reboot 3 times after completed i did not see super SU in menu

  109. David says:

    Hi,
Thanks for the information on rooting the HTC ONE X but unfortunately it didn’t work for me.
I have followed instructions 4 times to be sure that I was not missing anything. I’m using Linux Mint 13 which is based on Ubuntu, so i figured it would work on mint as well.

When attempting to root the phone, then I got a lot of failed messages with permissions denied when typing the last command in terminal ”sh runmelinux.sh” however I did get 3 reboots of the phone in the attempt.

  110. Siddharth Anand says:

Will this method set my bootloader to Tampered?
I need something, maybe a temp root only, without tampering my bootloader. I need to save the “Locked” status on my phone. Any suggestions?

  111. Logan says:

The website for the drivers will not work for me. I was wondering if there is another website I can download them from.I have Windows 7 64 bit.

  113. Hey , great guide as fa as i can tell but i followed all of the steps to the note and when finished nothing happened the only thing i can tell that was different from mine to the videos was i only had runme and not runme.bat could that have been a problem? also during the part when the black box comes up i got numerous things saying error due to more than one device or emulator. please give me feedback as i would love to have my att one x rooted in the near future.

  118. Aaron says:

Hey all my name is Aaron, and I am a rooting noob…oh hell that is an understatement…lol. Anyways I just got a new HTC One X Plus and my carrier is AT&T. Will using the oneXroot method root this phone? My biggest fear is obviously bricking it, or doing something to it that I have no idea how to fix. I had a buddy root my htc inspire a couple years ago, and am well aware of the benefits of rooting an android device, but this is my first time actually having to do it myself…and I just want everything to work smoothly. Any insights are much appreciated

    I get:
“Error: more than one device and emulator” multiple times and the patch fails.

    Any idea whats going on?

    Max,

I have tried every method offered to unlock and root my OneX that you offered. Unfortunately my firmware appears to be 3.18 and is impervious, seemingly, to exploit. Do you have a method to break through? I would really like to bring this phone up to speed. Thanks.
