Here’s a video tutorial that shows you how to easily upgrade your HBOOT to Jelly Bean HBOOT 1.39 for your international HTC One X Android smartphone.

Why do you need this?

Well, if you bought the phone with ICS and never upgraded to official Jelly Bean (mine hasn’t), you will not be able to install the latest Jelly Bean custom Sense ROMs.

But by upgrading you will be able to install the latest Jelly Bean Sense-based ROMs.

Once done upgrading HBOOT, you will have a LOCKED BOOTLOADER, simply follow instructions on rooting to unlock your bootloader afterwards!!!

Note: You do not need to update HBOOT to isntall AOSP ROMs like CM10.1, AOKP, etc…etc… This is ONLY if you want to install Sense-based Jelly Bean ROMs.

Download:

Download JBFWTOOL21
(Don’t have 7zip? Download and install 7Zip first so you can unzip .7z files.)

@Eugene. “My phone cant boot into any aokp roms after this”
After this you first must unlock your phone again!
I also had to reinstall the CWM. (There was a never version anyway.)

  9. Greg says:

    Hi,
I have HBOOT-0.43.0000 . So when I’m trying to upgrade hboot, it says
    ***************************************************************************
You need to upgrade your HBOOT to a newer version before you can upgrade to
    Jelly Bean Firmware.
A browser window has opened where you can download a RUU to do this.
Below is your current software version to help you choose the correct NEWER
    version for your device
    ***************************************************************************
    version-main: 1.26.401.2

But the messagge shown in new browser window says that
Invalid thread specified. This can happen for a variety of reasons– most likely because the thread or post you are trying to view has been moved or deleted. Please return to the forum home and browse for another similiar post.

How and where could I find correct version of hboot to make this middle-upgrade ?

  10. Greg says:

    –UPDATE–
As I said, I got an error message when trying to update the firmware from version to version 0.43.0000 1.39.0000 using the program JBFWTOOL21 this script could update only hboots versions newer than 0.43.0000.
OKAY, no problem at all. You dont need to upgrade to some middle version, just flash new hboot directly! Only keep in mind, you should get correct version according to your CID.
    I’ve found firmware 1.39.0000 for my CID = HTC__203 .
and successfully flashed the new firmware using the following method. You should reboot to fastboot, plug in USB, open command (i’ve using files from OneXRoot.zip, unzipped to D:\OneXRoot folder that’s all you need, plus firmware file, that should be placed exactly in the same folder. Then Open CMD, navigate to this folder, and run the following commands:
fastboot oem lock *here you’ll get message that device successfully locked or already locked*
fastboot oem rebootRUU *after that phone will reboot and you’ll se HTC logo on black screen*
fastboot flash zip firmware.zip *make sure firmware filename typed correctly*
fastboot reboot-bootloader *that’s all, folks! now the new version of htboot should appear on the screen*

After that we can flash stock RUU rom, or, unlock bootloader, flash new custom recovery, flash custom rom.

    Sincerely yours,
    Greg

i’m stuck on “waiting for device”….can anyone help?

    • checkyoulater says:

i had to update drivers to get past this, however the hboot only updated to 1.36…will try unlocking now hoping this works…

      • checkyoulater says:

so i figured out the problem, thankfully i was cautious enough to leave a copy of the ROM i wanted to install in the downloads folder in the SD card…installed new ROM, not booting…flashed boot.img….got that phone looks to be running well transferred the super SU file….installed…so far so good but now I can’t get the super user file to update…

it keeps saying update failed….any suggestions on how I can get back super user access?

        • checkyoulater says:

still not getting past the install process of the “superuser” app….tried the app install via this thread, tried installing through google play store…

if anyone knows how to get this to work please help…if i were to make a guess the original install file wasn’t/isn’t compatible with android 4.3….bummer

  19. Minh says:

    sending ‘zip’ (12877 KB)…
    OKAY [ 1.721s]
    writing ‘zip’…
(bootloader) adopting the signature contained in this image…
    (bootloader) signature checking…
FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail)
    finished. total time: 3.707s
-Wait for the green progress bar to fill
-Then press any key to boot into fastboot mode
