How to Unroot Rooted HTC One X!

For those of you on stock rooted ROM on the HTC One X (not a custom ROM), it’s very easy to unroot your rooted HTC One X.

What we will need to basically do is remove the su binaries from /system/bin and /system/xbin folder, also remove Superuser.apk from /system/app folder.

Then we will re-install the stock recovery, which will completely unroot your rooted HTC One X just in case you need to return the phone for warranty or other miscellaneous reasons.

Step 1. Download ES File Explorer app from the Play Store and run the app.

Step 2. Choose Menu->Settings.

Step 3. Make sure “Root Explorer” and “Mount File System” are checked ON.

Step 4. Choose “Favorites” then hit “/”.

Step 5. Browse to /system/bin/ and /system/xbin/ directories and erase any files named “su” if they exist. (they should exist in both or just in one of the directories.)

Step 6. Next, go into /system/app/ directory and erase Superuser.apk.

Doing Step 5 and Step 6 completely removes root and Superuser from your phone.  We are almost done but you have to re-install stock recovery so go to Step 7.

Step 7. Hold down Volume Down and Power button together for about 10 seconds until you are in bootloader mode.  Choose “FASTBOOT” and hit Power button and connect your HTC One X to your computer via micro-USB cable.

Step 8. Download and unzip to your Downloads folder.

Open up a command prompt for Windows or terminal for Mac/Linux and type:

cd Downloads

cd OneXUnroot

For Windows:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

For Mac:

chmod 755 *

./fastboot-mac flash recovery recovery.img

For Linux:

chmod 755 *

./fastboot-linux flash recovery recovery.img

Step 9. Next, you will probably want to do a factory reset in stock recovery to clear all your personal settings and apps.  You can stop here though if you are not returning your phone to store.

Hold down Volume Down and Power button together for about 20 seconds.

Step 10. Choose “RECOVERY” and hit the Power button.  You should also noticed that your HTC One X has been “RELOCKED”.

Step 11. Once you get a screen like below, hit the Volume Up and Power button together until you see blue menus, which is the stock recovery.

Step 12. Choose “Wipe data/factory reset”.

Step 13. Choose “Yes”.  When it’s done, simply reboot.

Step 14. Your HTC One X should now be completely back to factory status.

Make sure you backup/erase all of your personal photos/videos on the internal storage of your HTC One X before you return it for warranty.

when using ES file explorer, do the following:
go to menu (tap 3 dots at the bottom of the screen)
      tap settilngs
      tap Home Directory
on the line you type “/” without quatas and tap ok
then, when you return to main screen of ES explorer enter any folder.
when you have entered the folder, you will see that the first icon which is on top left side has changed into little house.
when you tap this little house, you will enter the root folder.
      you’re in

  23. Jake says:

  24. Anthony says:

Max, can you please solve a few issues since rotting. I cannot send pic messages, text messages over 30 or so letters, have no network other than wifi (ive input correct APN from 02). Im happy with the root just need these peoblems dealing with as it has been in this state now for a couple of weeks. Thanks

  25. Anthony says:

Can I install custom stock rom (bloatware removed) in unroot mode? If so, how?

  26. haqst says:

If I unroot my OneX, will the HTC’s original “stock” Rom also restore to the phone or does the custom rom still be in the phone?

  27. David says:

Once I unroot it, it says **RELOCKED** in the bootloader mode.
Anyway to unroot it and become **LOCKED** in bootloader mode?

    • Max says:

You have to use RUU, but you don’t need to do that unless you are returning your phone for warranty, r u returning your phone for warranty?

      • Nicholas says:

I am returning my phone for warranty and I am stuck in “This build is for development purposes only Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC’s written permission. Failure to comply may lead to legal action”

      • David says:

I will need to return my One X back to HTC for them to fix the well known wifi issue.
Just in case they are not going to fix/replace for me saying that I have void the warranty.

        • Max says:

You will definitely need RUU, try XDA forums for now, I tried to make a tutorial yesterday but I couldn’t find the correct RUU for my own One X. I think if you at least relock it I don’t think they will void the warranty, at least not that I heard of. Just make sure its on stock ROM, they will take it back no questions asked. Usually they check for things like water damage more than software/rooting.

  28. In need of help says:

Hi Max i got a problem i followed everything in your tutorial but it still says its unlocked and i still have revolution HD rom on my htc one x what can i do now ?

    • In need of help says:

I looked at the image you posted when you relocked it and i typed in the command fastboot oen lock

now it says Relocked and under it security warning

      • Max says:

You can unlock and restore our stock Rom did u make a backup?

        • In need of help says:

no i just got a vodafone uk ruu and updated the phone it went back to relocked but the problem is i cant take it back for warnty because it says “relocked” is there a way to make it say “locked” like originaly

  29. Adrian says:

Noob question in relation to restoring stock ROM on my phone. I see from “How to Backup & Restore ROM…” in ClockworkMod a backup folder is created that you can rename via windows. Does this folder contain a recovery.img for the phone, *.img or something else again. I’m curious because you supply a recovery.img in the and I’m thinking one has already been created when backing up the ROM.

One more thing. In terms of maintaining my warranty and reducing risk of making my phone a brick. When a newer Android Version becomes available, as painful it would seem, would it be safer to postpone installing the new version and rollback to the Stock ROM, then install the Android Version update, Backup new stock ROM and reinstall custom ROMs.

  36. Adrian says:

Check again that you have a onexunroot folder in Downloads and not just the zip folder in the downloads directory.

Try this. From Windows Start type in cmd and right click on it to run as system administrator. CD\ to go to root and cd the destination path. If your not sure what the desination path is look in file manager something like
And see how you go from there. Hope it helps.

    Hello Max,

I have the HTC one X, and i have rooted last week my phone.
My previous phone (HTC HD2) i had upgrade it first to android and latest to MIUI rom.
The the phone was much more stable, and i liked the MIUI interface.
Now with my HTC i would again try MIUI rom (or another interesting rom), but for some reason i have some doubts.
I want to be sure that i can always go back to my current stock rom. I have read the file How to unroot, but still i doubt. i am not specialized enough that i know exactly what i’m doing.
CAn you please guide me to explain me which guideline i have to follow exactly to place a new miui rom and which guideline i have to follow if i want to go back to current stockrom?
    I would be greatfull.
And can you tell me which customrom uses the most from HTC Sense? That is also a question if i will miss this with MIUI rom?

    Kind regards,

    André Smits

Hi. I’ve rooted my HOX using your method. It works well. But then I decided to used a Custom ROM and along the installing process, I accidentally deleted the Nandroid backup of the stock ROM. Currently running the CM10 mod that you recommended on your site.

My question is, is there any tutorial to Unroot and restore the stock ROM without the Nandroid backup of the stock ROM on a Mac?. I don’t have a Windows PC, so, I’m kinda stuck with Rooting and Unrooting Android phones using a Mac. If there’s no Mac tutorial on how to Unroot and restore the HOX from Custom to Stock ROM without the Nandroid backup, then a Windows tutorial will have to do I guessed. Got to used my office computer I guessed.

Thanks in advanced for any replies or help. Appreciate it.

So I unrooted my One X to be able to update it but every time I attempt to update it gets half way through the update and a question mark appears and doesn’t successfully update. So I called HTC and they said it was a hardware problem. But since my boot loader shows relocked would they charge me for the repair since rooting voids your warranty?

I’ve installed Leedroid, but now i want to go back to stock.
I followed your instructions when installing, I now also have a different kernel.

How can I install the stock kernel?
When i go completely back to stock with you instruction in this video everything installs perfectly, only when i reboot my phone (when i try to update it to stock 4.1) it always starts up in fastboot mode.
I think this is because of the different kernel?

Max PLEASE help me out,I rooted the One X but all custom roms were having issues:” has stopped”,so I ran my nandroid backup, now HTC is providing Sense 5 OTA but even that wont install unless I unroot, tried unrooting but in cmd after entering cd OneXUnroot I get System cannot find path specified,so basically I’m stuck on Sense 4.1,I want either Cyanogenmod or Sense 5

The best guide to unroot HTC one x with original ROM. worked beautifully.
i got stuck for a while at step#9 where the phone was still showing ***unlocked***. i opened cmd again and typed “fastboot oem lock” as shown in the screen shot.
finally i got the phone back to factory state.
updated the phone to 4.2.2. life is beautiful again.
    Thank you Max.
