How to Unlock Bootloader and Root AT&T HTC One X/HTC One XL!

SO, you want to install custom ROMs on your AT&T HTC One X?

Well, you can now by changing CID on the AT&T HTC One X to 11111111, which will allow you to unlock bootloader using HTCDev.com.

Before we begin, you will need a rooted AT&T HTC One X, please see Root Any HTC One X! (If this root method doesn’t give you root, you might have a newer software version where HTC blocked root, you will have to wait until another root method is out)

How to Install ROM on Rooted HTC One X!

So, you want to install a custom ROM on your rooted HTC One X?

Note – This is ONLY for HTC One X, not AT&T HTC One X or One XL.

Even if you have ClockworkMod Recovery installed, you will need to actually boot Recovery from fastboot to install new ROM correctly. The reason is that although the bootloader has been unlocking using HTC’s Method, this does not allow you to install kernels. ROMs usually come with kernels so you have to boot Recovery from fastboot (which allows you to fully install kernels) to get it working.

How to Unroot Rooted HTC One X!

For those of you on stock rooted ROM on the HTC One X (not a custom ROM), it’s very easy to unroot your rooted HTC One X.

What we will need to basically do is remove the su binaries from /system/bin and /system/xbin folder, also remove Superuser.apk from /system/app folder.

Then we will re-install the stock recovery, which will completely unroot your rooted HTC One X just in case you need to return the phone for warranty or other miscellaneous reasons.

How to Backup and Restore ROM on Rooted HTC One X!

For those of you who have rooted your HTC One X, I “highly advise” you to make at least one backup of your newly rooted stock ROM. Having a backup of your stock ROM will allow you to unroot easily if there’s any reason for you to go back to completely stock.
